Cord Spells

Sometimes you have to do a spell in advance. Where can you store the action of the spell? In a cord! Traditionally, sailors carried knotted cords given to them by witches. When they were becalmed, the sailors would untie a knot to release the wind magic placed in the knot by the spellcaster.

When selecting the material for a cord spell, try to use natural material, such as cotton, silk, wool, or linen. The material you use doesn’t have to be a cord at all, of course. Do knot spells with yarn, embroidery floss, tapestry wool, and strips of cloth. Knot and cord spells aren’t just tying a knot; all sorts of weaving are classified as cord magic. If you knit, spin, crochet, embroider, or weave, you’re performing some sort of cord and knot magic. After all, we commonly refer to someone “weaving a spell.” If you have long hair, braiding it can be a spell. When women were accused of witchcraft by the Inquisition, their hair was cut off in order to prevent them from braiding spells in their hair. The motion of weaving something in and out in order to create a new item out of various separate strands is very powerful.

When you specifically choose to use a knot spell for a particular situation, remember that you might have to undo it at some point. The symbolism lies in the act of tying the knot—not in how tightly you pull it.

There are a variety of creative ways to employ cord and knot magic. While knot magic is good for containing energy (either temporarily or permanently), these other kinds of cord magic are good for abundance and manifestation spells.

Embroidery and Cross-Stitch

Once considered a ladylike activity that women used to decorate clothes and keep their hands busy, embroidery and cross-stitching is a remarkably powerful spell technique. Incorporate color correspondences and image correspondences. For example, flowers and vines usually represent life; fruit or vegetables represent abundance and plenty. Clothes can be embroidered with protective symbols or symbols that draw positive energy to the wearer.

Tapestry

Tapestry and needlepoint are heavier versions of embroidery and cross-stitch. There are printed images available on heavy, woven tapestry canvas to use if you don’t trust your own imagination or layout skills. Another option is plain canvas, on which you can plot your own images or follow a paper pattern by counting squares.

Looms

Weaving is a wonderfully relaxing and creative form of spellwork. In elementary school, children often make placemats by weaving strips of paper together. The process of weaving takes separate cords and creates a larger unit from them. My grandfather was a weaver; one of the rooms in his house was filled almost wall to wall with a huge wooden loom, with skeins of wool in various weights hanging from the ceiling around it. I still cherish one of the pillow covers he wove. Investing in a loom is financially beyond the reach of most of us, but you can often find online or at your local toy store children’s weaving kits, which contain smaller-scale looms.
